April 2 - Day 12

Back

Today we took the longest core ever!!

So I got up a little early today, they had a fire drill at 10 am (I had gone to bed at 5). The odd thing was that I didn't hear the alarm at all and I didn't wake up until I heard the steward yelling in the hall, and I still wasn't sure what was going on until she stuck her head in my cabin and started yelling. My cabin is right next to the forward engine room, which makes it loud as heck, but strangely enough it has been making me sleep like a rock (that or the fact that I have been working hard every day :-p ) Anyhow, I hope that they don't have a real fire or other problem while I'm sleping because chances are that the stewards will have something better to do than wake up sleepyheads.

In any event, we actually did a full 150 foot core today. It was pretty cool, According to the guys they did one during the sea trials but they've never done a full length one for science. The tube was really wobbly looking as it went over, I'll upload and link all my pictures when I get back to shore. There are a lot of cool people out here, their 3rd engineer has a naval architecture degree from MIT and is from Holland and their chief mate grew up on the Canadian border of Maine and is a big John Candy fan. After the long core-which took a while as it was in 3km of water, at a line rate of 50m/min that equals .. ummmmmm a while anyhow-we cleaned up and watched tropic thunder. I guess that the cruise is pretty much done now, we are steaming back to the Galapagos and we have one spot in the center of the islands that they are planning to do a core in before we pull into harbor and bail. So all in all nothing too extremely exciting today, but lots of fun nonetheless. I'm on a boat!!!
